Overcoming Impulsivity: Teaching Kids to Stop and Think to Make Good Choices

Kids often act without thinking, which can lead to poor decisions or even unsafe situations. Helping them pause before making choices is key to building good decision-making habits.

Encourage your child to take a moment to think about their options and what might happen as a result. Teach them to notice when emotions like stress or excitement are driving their decisions, and show them simple ways to calm down, like taking deep breaths or talking to you.

As a parent, you can set a good example by explaining your own decision-making process. Use easy visual reminders, like a stop sign, to help them remember to pause.

Role-playing different situations is another great way to teach this skill. By acting out scenarios and talking about the possible outcomes, you can help your child practice decision-making in a safe, supportive environment. This builds their confidence in making good choices.

It’s also important to give kids real-life chances to practice thinking before they act. Set up situations where they need to make decisions and guide them through the process. With your support, they’ll learn to make thoughtful choices and be less impulsive over time.
